Sunday May 24, 1998 My Commercial Union account no. is XXXXXXXXX and I have 28 thousand pounds invested with yourselves,
Let me tell you about a different Commercial Union.
I am now 48 years old but when I was sixteen , I had a motor cycle, my pride and joy, which was used every day for work. One day I was driving to work and drove into a pothole, damaging the front wheel rim of my bike but fortunately no injury to myself. Basically, I suffered what is termed now as a pure financial loss.
Stirling County Council was responsible for the condition and repair of the road and Commercial Union was their insurer. I eventually made a claim against CU to recover the repair of my motor cycle, but CU refused to pay. They stated that their client was not to blame.
I was rather young and certainly not wise to the ways of the world in these days and thought that when people had a responsability they should stand by it. My claim was for under ten pounds, not a lot of money, but certainly a lot of money to me at that time.
My lawyer advised me against persuing the claim on a cost basis. To cut a long story short, I have always felt CU owed me for the repair of my bike and played apon my age and inexperiece and the ineptidude of my lawyer to get out of paying my claim.
You now have the opportunity to correct this situation. The money is not important but the principal is . Commercial Union should have payed my claim. To rectify this situation, I ask very little. Over the years, my interests have changed and am now a keen golfer. May I suggest that a golf ball donation would wipe the slate clean. I am very satisfied with your handling of my account and will continue to do business with Commercial Union. Regards Jim Christie.

Brefni's Response
Dear James Christie,
Did you ever consider that the return on your CU investment account may come in part from depriving the vulnerable, the inexperienced, the old, or the young as you once were of rightful insurance claims. Many people are finding that they can achieve satisfactory returns, both moral and financial, through ethical investments.
