Paula Mascioli also lives in Ottawa. A flooded basement was the reason for her first insurance claim, back in 1989. "What's the whole point of having home insurance if when I make a claim I get punished for it?
I had fairly major water damage which ruined my carpets. In 1991, I believe there was a case of vandalism. I was vacationing out of the country and I had some jewellery and my camera stolen. So that was another claim.
Subsequently I had more water damage from a burst pipe that occurred in the middle of the night. And then the last claim which was the most extensive damage was a fire that I had in 1995."
After those four claims Mascioli says she was dropped for being too high a risk. Her insurer, Dominion of Canada, gave her 6 weeks' notice to find another company.
The size of the claims makes no difference and it can be a few as one claim before you have no insurance.
Once you are considered high risk by one insurer you have been effectively black listed since one of the first questions all insurers ask is if you have ever been refused insurance.
If you answer yes they aren't interested in you as a customer
